    Strategies to Success

Community Health Systems (CHS) applies the following selection criteria for favorable demographics, economic trends and competitive conditions:

  • Negotiates with insurers to get top dollar for services.
  • Operates its facilities efficiently.
  • Encourages hospitals to maintain their local identity and does not brand hospitals as being affiliated with CHS.
  • Makes more services available closer to home, thus stemming out migration and securing market share.
  • Identifies acquisition candidates in growing non-urban markets with little or no competition.
Industry analysts say time and again that CHS’ strategy is simple but effective. The organization’s plan for integrating and improving the financial and operating performance of newly acquired hospitals, and more importantly, developing strong community relations, has continued to be a distinct competitive advantage for CHS.

The CHS Business Model:
Effectively Integrating Acquisitions
and Improving Hospital Operations

When a hospital becomes affiliated with CHS, that facility has access to significant amounts of capital to expand services, add equipment, upgrade technology and make physical improvements. Major capital investments fund such items and projects as:

  • Major renovations and expansions
  • Information Systems upgrades
  • New equipment upgrades
  • New service line enhancements
