Wayne Smith, Chairman of the Board, President and Chief Executive Officer
Wayne Smith joined CHS in 1997 and in the years since, he has become one of the most tenured and respected executives in the healthcare industry, garnering professional recognition from peers and investors alike.
For the last ten years, Mr. Smith has been selected by the readers of Modern Healthcare Magazine as one of the "100 Most Influential People in Healthcare". He has also been honored year after year by investor organizations as being the top CEO in the institutional provider segment of the health care sector.
When Mr. Smith was recruited as Community Health Systems, Inc.'s President and CEO, he brought more than 20 years of healthcare industry experience to the company. He was named Chairman of the Board of Community Health Systems, Inc. in February 2001. Prior to joining CHS, Mr. Smith was with Humana, Inc. for 23 years where he held a variety of senior management positions including President and Chief Operating Officer. He also was a member of Humana, Inc.'s Board of Directors from 1993 to mid-1996. He currently serves on the boards of directors of Praxair, Inc., a supplier of industrial gases and coatings and related services and technologies, the Nashville Healthcare Council (2006 and 2007 Chairman), the Federation of American Hospitals (2003 and 2012 Chairman) and on the Board of Trustees for Auburn University.
Before joining Humana in 1973, Mr. Smith spent four years as a Captain in the U.S. Army Medical Services Corps. Mr. Smith holds both a bachelor of science and master of science from Auburn University and a master of science in healthcare administration from Trinity University. He studied at the King's Fund College of Hospital Administration in London, England.
Mr. Smith's service on other companies’ boards of directors provides him with insights and experiences to support his leadership of CHS and its Board of Directors.
W. Larry Cash, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer
Larry Cash was recruited to join CHS in 1997, bringing more than 35 years of healthcare experience to the company. Formerly, Mr. Cash held senior-level financial positions at Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corporation, Humana, Inc. (1973 – 1996) and Price Waterhouse Coopers. He is a member of Community Health Systems, Inc.'s Board of Directors.
For seven consecutive years (2005 through 2011), Mr. Cash has been named as one of America's Best CFOs in the health care facilities sector by Institutional Investor. In 2008, he was named BusinessTN's first ever CFO of the Year. In 2009, he was also named a Health Care Heroes Finance Champion by the Nashville Business Journal and CFO of the Year for large public companies sector.
Mr. Cash currently serves on the board of directors of Cross Country Healthcare, Inc., a provider of nurse and allied staffing services, multi-specialty locum tenens services, clinical trial services and other human capital management services in the healthcare industry, and he serves on its audit (chair) and compensation committees. He is a member of the Nashville Healthcare Council, American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and Healthcare Financial Management Association.
Mr. Cash is a graduate of the University of Kentucky and is professionally affiliated with the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Tennessee Society of Certified Public Accountants, and the Healthcare Financial Management Association.
Mr. Cash is CHS' financial executive and performs a substantial portion of the investor relations function for CHS. His prior managed care experience brings that perspective to the Board's deliberations and evaluation of its business and strategy.
